[obviously it's a misfire, and the owner of the voice can't be seen, but his omen sure can. the whole time this little rat is sniffing at the omni, running past the screen with something in its hands, and back again to set it down. she's sorting mushrooms, pleased and unnoticed by her sleeper. also unnoticed: that this is broadcasting.]
Goodnight light, and the red balloon. Goodnight bears, goodnight chairs. Goodnight kittens, and goodnight mittens. Goodnight house, and goodnight mouse.
[the rat looks directly into the omni, whiskers vibrating, nose twitching, and the video cuts off. immediately after, text follows:]
[Robyn is still getting the hang of how the omnis work, and she certainly wasn't expecting a message from a mouse--sorry, a rat. At first she's not entirely sure what to do or say about this...but she's experienced some oddities already, so she figures talking to a rat wouldn't be the strangest thing she's done so far.]
hello, rat. what are you doing with those mushrooms?
[delmira doesn't know why the omni turned itself on, but since it did she will take this opportunity to speak. her tiny squeaks are easily translated into text as she goes about her (important!) business.] hello! i am sorting them to make sure that they are safe. there are many kinds of mushrooms here and some are very helpful. but they can be dangerous if handled badly. I have to separate the caps from the stems.
and hide the caps!
what kind of creature are you? do you like mushrooms? i do! but not the blue ones. they are very pretty to look at but stay away from them.
i'm a human. [That's technically true, at least when she's awake.]
yes, i like mushrooms. but i know there are a lot of mushrooms that make you sick or kill you if you eat them.
[Her father mainly taught her how to hunt, but he also gave her a few lessons on mushrooms and which ones to stay away from. That makes her wonder if the mushrooms here are any different from the ones back home.]
NO NOT CAPITAL LETTERS REGULAR SENTENCE CAse thank you. the caps are very helpful in treating corruption but the spores are very bad! they make you see things that are not there and my sleeper has had enough of that thank you very much!
i am going to dry them somewhere only i can get to, and then i will grind them up and put them in jars to save. and to give other creatures. and humans :)
GOODNIGHT NOISES EVERYWHERE
that
that was not me. hmmm i cannot make it back up it is very stubborn my sLeeper is reading and this Omni should be able to tell us apart but maybe it doesn't want to.
anyway. there are another kind of mushroom very good for eating but hard to find. very pretty like raindrops!
i have three kinds. some of them were growing on the roof. an bit of an odd place for them to grow but easy for me to get!
[they are probably ...dreadfully different in some ways (tentacles) but similar in others (poison).]
[The mention of corruption gives her pause. She's heard about it, and apparently it's a very dangerous thing that can happen to people, but she doesn't know too much beyond that.]
the caps sound like they're useful, then. it's good of you to give it out to other people, if they need it.
so the omni is giving me messages from you and your sleeper? i didn't know it could do that. [Well, normally it wouldn't misfire like this, but Robyn doesn't realize that.]
you can call me delmira if you like. you will be the first to, robyn.
robyn, like the bird ROBIN. i know of several omens who are birds but i have not spoken to them yet. i think they are shy but i might be wrong. i wonder if there are any robins named human.
i like to keep busy. i also like to help. this way i get to do both thingS and i can eat a little too. and keep a secret! and help my sleeper!
oh, the Omni turned itself on! i was busy when it did but i saw it had found you and how rude it would have been of me not to say hello. and to clarify that i was not a mouse. i didn't know it could do that, either. i wonder what other tricks it has up its sleeves.
i like to go up sleeves but some humans find that ticklish. or they are afraid of me! imagine that.
that's a nice name. people should call you that more often, then.
there could be a robin named human somewhere. you never know. i have a bird, but he's not my omen, he came with me from home. [Robyn's grateful for that. It's a little easier having Merlyn here with her.]
i'm still trying to learn how the omni works. we didn't have anything like it back where i'm from. it would make talking to people from far away much easier if we did.
it does make it so easy! omens can talk to other omens instantly but i don't think sleepers can do that, and i don't know if that is good or bad. maybe both? it could be very noisy!
how did they talk to each other when they were far away in your world? what was it like where you are from? i have only known here.
merlyn's a falcon! he helps me with hunting and tracking.
well, back home people will just send letters. but sometimes they take a long time to reach people, or they can even get lost. or if somebody can't read, they'll send a messenger instead.
[As for what Robyn's own world is like...well, there are things she likes about it, and things she doesn't.]
some parts of where i'm from are nice. like the woods, and the countryside. but i don't like the towns much.
a falcon? oh! well good thing i am an omen because he can't eat me even if he wants to. i hope he doesn't want to because i will only be smoke and smoke isn't as tasty as mushrooms! but i suppose he can try if wants. i am not afraid of birds. i am not afraid of most things. but! falcons are good hunters! fierce birds! majestic.
some people send messages like that here too but i am not sure why. but i don't ask.
there are woods here too. they aren't always safe but with an omen and a hunting bird you might be just fine! there are farms and pretty places outside the city. dangerous places too.
why don't you like the towns? i love town! most of the time. so many smells and so many places to hide. to be!
don't worry, i'll tell him not to eat you. he doesn't really eat rats very much anyway, he likes smaller birds better.
[Plus, Merlyn is likely smart enough to eventually catch on to the fact that he can't eat someone else's omen.]
it's nice that there are woods here. i've heard there are beasts or something like that living there, but i don't really know what people mean by beasts.
there are a lot of smells in towns. the one i lived in had too many. and people kept telling me i had to stay there and do scullery work all the time instead of going where i wanted. [Yeah, she has some issues with that.] but it looks like people can go where they like here, at least.
[she will warn the pigeons she knows - the ones mike feeds, even though they are not the nicest birds she has met in trench.]
they mean corruption things. not like animals or regular creatures. they mean monsters. they can look like all kinds of things!
yes! that's a thing i REALLY like. the food smells and the shop smells are my favorite. i don't think i know what scullery work is but it doesn't sound very fun if you have to be made to do it.
[After all, back home most people viewed the wolves as monsters that needed to be wiped out, but Robyn would eventually learn how that wasn't really true.]
a scullery is a big room where all the cooking and washing is done. the women who work there just do that every day for their whole lives. people kept telling me it's a righteous life for a young lady, but that's not the life i want.
most of the time they really are. it's because of the blood here. some of them don't mean to be monstrous at all they just can't stop it. and then they have to call the hunters in :( but! sometimes we can help them.
do you have monsters in your land?
that sounds BORING and also silly. why can't everyone just wash their own things? can't men wash things? men can cook. let them cook their own meals!
i love helping people but that's because i want to! good luck getting me to do something i don't!
i think everyone should get to decide their own things. unless they're a monster and trying to devour the city, or do other really bad things.
[The part about the beasts saddens her a little. At one point, Robyn would have been eager to try and hunt them all down, but after her experiences with Mebh and the wolves she knows that isn't always the best approach.]
there are lots of stories about monsters, but most people haven't really seen any. and there are normal animals that people are just as scared of as monsters, like wolves and bears.
[The wolves, though, she's definitely learned more about.]
people SHOULD try to cook and wash their own things. but the scullery was in the lord protector's castle, and people like him can't be bothered to do those things themselves.
technically i am blood! so is the omni! i think that is fascinating. and it means you can't break it. or lose it! and that when blood gets weird maybe it does things like this and just turns on.
[such excitement over an odd, possibly creepy fact. but it's not creepy (or even odd) if one is an omen. and maybe that last part isn't so good, but it isn't bad.]
i like wolves. i haven't met a bear yet but i will make an educated guess that i like bears too. if i do meet a bear and i don't like it then i owe you something shiny.
stories about monsters are my favorite kind of stories, but really i just like stories!
if they are important enough to live in a castle that means they should know how to do everything! what was he protecting you from?
[That sure is a lot of blood used for everything here...]
i like wolves, too. and it doesn't seem like people hunt them here. [Which is one less thing for Robyn to worry about.]
and i also like stories! do you know any good ones?
he was really the king, but he made everyone call him "lord protector" instead. maybe he thought he was protecting people from SOMETHING, but i don't know what that could be.
i do! i do! but i'm not as good at telling them as my sleeper is. i'm better at other things. most of the ones i remember are short and scary. i could tell you one sometime but you have to promise not to laugh at me if it is not fancy or if i can't do all the voices.
i would hate for it to be disappointing. but i will still try! :)
maybe. humans are very strange sometimes. he could have been a hunter here and then he would really be protecting against SOMETHINGS. that's what the hunters do. PROTECT!
i promise i won't laugh. i always try to do voices when i tell stories, too, so you're probably not any worse than me.
[She's not the best at them, but in the end it doesn't matter that much to her.]
my father is a hunter. if he were here, i'm sure he could help out with protecting everyone. merlyn and i would help him hunt for food back home.
[Granted, Bill's desire to protect Robyn in particular put a lot of strain on their relationship, but it seems that he's come around after everything they went through.]
it is a deal then! and this rat does not break her word.
[she is very much the echo of a ten year old girl she's never met but she has her shit together a lot more than her sleeper does right now. he is ...working on that.]
then you can help here too. we always need hunters. and if you count your bird (i do! birds count!) then that is two hunters. you must be very fearsome. trench is lucky to have you.
:)
just don't hunt the deer. they are special. PROTECTED!
oh! and you can trade for most food and there is FREE food on the boardwalk so you never have to worry about going hungry. i think that's nice.
[it's hard to protect anyone in trench, but this little rat has seen it happen on occasion. some seem to be luckier than others.]
[The Lord Protector's soldiers were certainly afraid when she and the wolves held them off from reaching Mebh's den, but at the time she didn't really think about it. All that mattered then was helping Mebh and her mother.]
it sounds like i'll be alright for food, then. but why are the deer protected? [Admittedly, she doesn't have as much experience with hunting bigger game, but deer meat would have been a welcome meal here.]
the people that live here worship the deer! not the sleepers but the people that are born here. but i don't think they would stop any sleepers from believing too.
if you find antlers you can hang them over your door. it's lucky.
if you see a deer it is considered a great blessing!
may you see a whole lot of deer new sleeper, robyn!
i would talk all morning if i could but i have to work before my sleeper sees
it is a SURPRISE
goodbye but not forever?
you can send me a message if you ever get lonely or bored or just want to know something useful or maybe not useful
[ it hurt to wake up; it was cold, dark, heavy, falco couldnāt hear a thing, and when he gasped for air with more surprise than anything, his lungs burnedā only after the fact that he realized he wasnāt possessed, or in a place where he couldnāt conventionally breathe. he was in water.
it took a few seconds to understand what was up and down, if not a quick rise to panic. not only was he in water, not only did the cold hurt to the point that he could only feel numbness, but he was under ice. harming himself to bring about his abilities (biting his tongue and keeping his mouth shut; he wouldnāt dare try to bleed freely in another ecosystem) was fruitless and he didnāt know whyā perle, his pygmy falcon omen, was in a shrieking distress on the other side of the ice, urging him to break through.
breaking through was not an option by himself, and with little time remaining before he drowned, falco tried to follow her; he swims and searches for a hole, a crack, some greater lightā
[That someone else is Robyn, who at first is merely unconscious as she floats underwater. Soon, though, her whole body jerks and she wakes up with a start; her eyes widen and her mouth opens in shock before she quickly closes it upon the realization that she's actually underwater.
She looks around to see if she's anywhere close to the surface, hoping that she can at least push herself upwards...but then she catches Falco's eye. It seems she's not the only one down here, but how did that happen?]
[ it was hard to find out at that very instant, but falco kicks and waves his arms through the water to get to her. his eyes sting and his vision blursā but he could definitely make out that itās a girl.
looking up and then back at her, he points to the surface with urgency and holds out his hand. they needed to do something about it. ]
[Robyn has never met this boy before, but that's still easy enough to understand, even underwater. All she can do is nod and take his hand in response.
She looks up at the surface, trying to see if there's any openings in the ice they can take advantage of. Hopefully there's some way to break through...]
[ he kicks and spreads his arms wide to give himself momentum, but once they are close enough to the ice to touch and search . . . thereās nothing. as bubbles of air escape past his lips, with perle on the other side frantically pecking at the surfaceā there are no holes. thereās no escape from it no matter how much he spreads his hands around and searches.
heās beginning to panic and this point. thereās no way out, he canāt shift to blow the ice slabs awayā in his last ditch effort, he pulls fingers into a fist and hammers into their imprisonment with everything heās got.
[When they get to the surface and find no openings, Robyn feels like panicking herself. They need to get out to the surface, and if they don't...
But soon she finds herself trying to rationalize the situation. There has to be a way out somehow; she can't think of how they both could have ended up here otherwise. And even if Falco's attempts to break through the ice don't do anything, maybe...
At some point, Robyn will start banging against the ice as well. Maybe it could work if they both do it together.]
[ when they both manage to bang at the ice with the bottom of their first, the surface gives the smallest of audible and visible cracks. you could see the line, the little air bubbles fluttering from them and sticking to the tight fractures. falco's eyes rush open wide, and without further ado— he hits harder with her.
[It seems they're on to something, even if the solution is fairly simple. The more they hit against the ice, the more it cracks, and while the cracks are small at first, they steadily get bigger as they apply more force.
Robyn's not sure how much longer she can hold her breath underwater for, but at least this is distracting her from thinking too much about that.]
[ the loudest crack was a beam of light in their panic, and relief so big that falco could barely wait to breach the shattered ice surface to gasp loud and harsh, then a second time, and another as he gathered himself on a sturdier piece of ice with his arms sprawled across it to bare his waitā and letās not forget the girl.
heās shivering madly through his breathing, but the boy finds the air to say, as he turns to find her: ]
[Robyn feels a similar relief when the ice finally breaks apart into a hole big enough to swim through. She's shivering as well, but it hasn't registered to her yet how cold she is--she's just glad she and this stranger managed to make it out alive.]
I'm...I'm alright. Are you...?
[She also hasn't realized yet that they've somehow ended up at a random street in Trench, and they're also somehow halfway out of a manhole.]
Iāmā o-okay, now, [ but heās threatening to stutter every word he speaks at this point! so cold. no amount of hugging himself will help unless he goes and gets a hot bath. where were they even? perle, his tiny falcon omen, lands on his shoulder with great big puffs of shivering feathers. i was so worried, she coos. ] W-weāre both okay then, Iām gladā
[Well, that's certainly something that can take her mind off of how cold they both are. It isn't too long before Robyn's own falcon, Merlyn, swoops down to land on her arm, even if she shivers while holding it out.]
[For the first time since they came up for air, Robyn tries to get her bearings on where they are.]
Um, do...d-do you know where we are right now? [She's only just realized they're on a random street in Trench, and with everything that's happened she's not entirely sure where it is.]
[ he has to look around better to confirm that, and sadly, nothing is really ringing a distinct bell. trench was so big, and it was certain that even in a year of being here, he didn't know every corner of the city. ]
I d-don't, but— If we walk a bit, I'm sure we'll find somewhere I've been.
[ i can help with that, perle adds, and takes to the sky to find their way around. ]
